The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) has a remarkably wide range of basic facilities, where experiments are performed in elementary particle physics, nuclear physics, and condensed matter physics. The graduate students of the JINR-based departments of higher education institutions can work at these facilities and, at some of them, perform the tasks of the UC's special physics practicum.
JINR, however, also offers undergraduate physics programmes. They are attended by students of the following Dubna-located higher education institutions: Dubna University and the Dubna branch of Moscow Institute of Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Automatics. Physics installations are being created at JINR for the undergraduate students to perform the programme of a general physics practicum.
As a result of this activity, a new structure emerged within the UC in 2006: the UC Student Laboratories. The laboratory complex is located at the fifth floor of Building 113, Laboratory of Nuclear Problems, and consists now of the following four laboratories: Physical Optics, Molecular Physics and Thermodynamics, Atomic Physics, and Nuclear Physics. The creation of these laboratories was largely possible thanks to Dubna University, which had provided funds for the acquisition or fabrication of the optic and atomic physics installations. The spectrometers at the Nuclear Physics Laboratory were made thanks to the sponsorship offered by the Beneficent Foundation of the "Sistema" joint stock finance corporation.
The student laboratory complex is planned to be developed, supported, and used jointly with the higher education institutions whose students are based at JINR and need a general or special practicum. At the UC Student Laboratories, the exercises are now performed by the students of the Departments of Theoretical Physics and Nuclear Physics, Dubna University, and the students of the Department of Electronics for Physics Facilities, the Dubna branch of Moscow Institute of Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Automatics.
